Mrs. Chitty lives at Isle of Palms and belongs to two book clubs.  Every year they give Barnes & Noble gift cards to a charity and this year they picked The James Simons Literacy Project.  Mrs. Chitty's mother went to James Simons Elementary School when she was a little girl and she cares a lot about the school.  Together the two book clubs gave almost $200 in gift cards.  Thank you!

The members of this book club gave three bags of new books at Circular Church.  Thank you very much.  When I went to pick them up there were actually five bags of books, so thank you also to the members of Circular who brought the other two bags of books.  I wish I knew who you are so I could thank you personally.  And this is what five bags of books looks like.  The total count from Circular is 64 books.

Mrs. Korz is in a book group at Isle of Palms and she donated enough to buy a hard back book.  Thank you very much.

They bought a book in Guatemala City when they went to visit.  Thank you!.

She is Taki Johnson's aunt and she sent a check for $50 in her honor.  It will buy a dozen paperbacks.  The project has now raised $665 to buy new books.  Thank you!

She sent a check to the s $120 in honor of all of her "Utsey grandchildren."  We can use that money to buy at least ten hardback books, probably more.  Thank you!

Bobbie, Rose and Thomas gave 8 new books to Jame Simons:  4 Magic Tree House, Junie B., Jerry Spinelli, Harold's Purple Crayon and Zack's Alligator.  Thank you!

This is my mom's book club and for this year, they gave books to my project.  Last year at Christmas they gave books to MUSC Children's Hospital.  There are a total of 14 books, including When Marian Sang, another copy of Kickoff, three Judy Blume books, Sukey and the Mermaid, and a collector edition of Captain Underpants.  Thank you!

We will count out the exact number this weekend but it looks like more than 100 books, maybe more than 150, brand new books, for all ages of elementary school children.  We will try to get a picture of the bankers at The Bank of SC who put together this incredible contribution.  A lot of people obviously got involved.  We will make another post with more details, but take a look at what we got for James Simons!

These donors asked that I not list their names, but their gift is in honor of these friends and family, and in lieu of holiday gifts to them this year:

Alison, Rachel, Liz and Richard Bloom in NY, Mary Ellen Colten, Barry Bluestone and Joshua Bluestone in Massachusetts, Ashley, Molly, Phyllis and Sam Deans in North Carolina, Adele, Ruby, Jon and Laura Pinyuh-Derovan in California, Isla, James and Patricia DeTreville, Charleston, Sarah Chamberlain, Charleston, Florence Horowitz, Mount Pleasant, Anna Johnson and Bryan Toole in Mount Pleasant, Roger and Della Morris, Charleston, Ivan and Rhonda Nossokoff, Charleston, Regina Semko, Charleston, John Williams, Charleston, Joan Sommers, NJ, and Hope and George Massar, Arizona.

We will be able to use this money to buy whatever kind of books we don't get enough of, once we start sorting out ages.  Thank you to our donor, this is the most generous contribution we have gotten so far, and thank you to the folks who are being honored instead of gifted too.   The project has now raised $500 total in cash contributions to buy books.
