Links We Like

We know what the problem is.  Illiteracy is a problem that leads to a host of other problems, for all of us.  You can read more statistics about the problem, nationally, at Reading is Fundamental.

A lot of people are doing a lot of different things to improve literacy all across the United States.  Read about Jumpstart and Read for the Record.  Another organization giving books to children is First Book.  We also just found out about Better World Books, so we have added their link too.

We also just added a link here for the Trident Literacy Association.  My mom used to write, copy, fold, stamp, and mail their newsletter, as a TRILA volunteer back in the 70's, before she was a mom, before there was internet.  (My mom's pretty old.)  She says the Baptists and the Catholics in Charleston have been working hard for literacy in Charleston for many, many years

Great Books for African-American Children, by Pamela Toussaint, former editor at Essence (Chapter 1: Helping Any Child Love Reading) Published in 1999, this book reviews more than 250 titles from the 1970s forward, including some that are out of print, categorized by age group, from toddlers to young adults, noting book awards, main value points and read-aloud-value, with tips and insights for parents.
