James Simons Elementary School

Picture
James Simons Elementary School was opened in 1919 with an enrollment of 600 children.   It was Charleston's fifth elementary school, named in honor of James Simons, the Chairman of the Charleston Board of Public School Commissioners from 1907-1919.  It is located at the corner of King and Moultrie Streets near Hampton Park, 741 King Street, on the peninsula of Charleston, South Carolina.

Currently, James Simons is a Title I school serving 300 children from child development  through sixth grade.  The poverty index is 96%, based on the number of children who qualify for free or reduced meals.  More than 60% of the students read below grade level. You can see the most recent reading scores by grade if you are interested.

Our school has highly qualified teachers and staff members who are  committed to improving student achievement.  We monitor PASS, MAP, Dominie Reading Asessment, Dibbles, Star Reading, running records and common assessments in order to address the needs of each of our students individually.  Our areas of focus include parent and family involvement, and the creation of libraries for our children in their homes.
