Buy A Book

Picture
Go to your favorite bookstore and ask for one of these books - they will order more!  If they don't have the one you want, they will think about buying more books that feature children of color.  You can bring or mail your book to school, or drop it off at these NBSC branch offices and other drop locations.  You can also order online - just use the school's address for your shipping information.  It would be nice if you could sign your book, "This is a gift from __________."  If you put this information in your gift message we can inscribe it for you.  And please let us know if we may thank you publicly on our blog

$$ Give Money $$

You would be amazed how many wonderful books are only $5.  There are beautiful paperbacks - the one above is $7.99.  No book featured costs more than $20.  Give $5, $10, $15 or $20, and Kim Livingston, the school's Media Director, will use the money to fill in the gaps.  If you can give more - well, we can buy more books.  We will have a PayPal link so that you can contribute with a credit card, but you can also mail a check directly to The James Simons LIteracy Project and the school will receive more.  And please let us know if we may thank you publicly on our blog

Give Time

Picture
If you have one free hour each week to read to a child, please consider being a part of Book Buddies.  Volunteers must be willing to commit to a consistent schedule, but all it takes is an hour.  The school hosts Reading with Realtors, and Citadel cadets volunteer, but more individual readers are still needed.  Please call Principal Lynn Owings.

Buy a Magazine Subscription

Picture
Just use the school's address when you place the order.  Or drop your own magazines off at the school when you are finished reading them.  Sports Illustrated for Kids is really popular.  Magazines of interest to parents are also encouraged, as parents who model reading encourage their children to see reading as pleasurable.  News and Entertainment titles are welcome.  And if you receive a buy one, get one free Christmas gift offer, think about giving the additional subscription to the school.

Give as a Group

If your book club, church, school or office is looking for a worthwhile investment, consider banding together to give books or cash, and we will acknowledge your contributions in our blog.

Start Your Own Project

Find a child who doesn't have a book at home and give him one.  Seriously, even if you don't live in Charleston SC, we still need your help.  But every city has kids who need books and don't have them.  And we think this a good and fun way to promote literacy.  (You can follow along on our blog, to see if we're successful, before you decide.)
